Hot water was not an option...
There are efforts to protect and conserve all types of wildlife in the Gunung Leuser National Park. I visited this Sumatran elephant sanctuary that has rescued a dozen of this subspecies from several places around the island. These beautiful creatures suffer the same issues of habit loss as the orangutans and other wildlife. They get pushed out of their natural habitat due to logging. Illegal logging practices are a problem on the island and are incredibly invasive to the natural world. The wildlife, including the elephants are helpless and sometimes wander into human territory to seek salvation from the destruction of their habitat. This causes conflict with locals as elephants can be rather... reckless and damaging to human belongings.
These elephants are rescued and relocated into the protected grounds of the Gunung Leuser National Park. Orphaned elephants and others requiring rehabilitation are brought to an area on the edge of the park to be cared for until their hopeful return to the wild.
