Afternoon adventures with my host parents
Gruyères is a medieval town in the canton of Fribourg. It is well known for the Gruyères cheese that they produce. I have had it in Canada before but it tastes much better here in Switzerland and has become one of my favourite types of cheese. The town centre is rather small so it is easy to enjoy all of its beauty by foot. There are very interesting statues throughout the town that are fun to hunt for. When we were walking through the town I noticed a strong smell of cheese fondue. I could see people on all of the patios indulging in the cheesy goodness. There are lots of restaurants and fun little shops all along the main stretch that are all very enticing to enter. What brought us to Gruyères today was the St. Germain Castle which dates back to the 13th century. It is now a museum depicting 800 years of regional architecture, history and culture. We walked through all of the rooms, admired the art exhibits and enjoyed the views of the garden. When we were walking through the royal staff cooking area we got a bit spooked. My host dad noticed a hanging pot that had started to swing. There was no draft, all of the windows & doors were closed and nobody had touched the pot... we ran out of there faster then you could say boo.
